David Elliott: Background

In the workshopWhilst I have always been interested in sketching and various forms of artwork, I am fascinated by the interaction of light with all types of glass. In particular, the ability of compositions to be constantly changing due to the varying light conditions of the day. I also very much like the fact that every work is truly unique, even from a similar design base, because every single piece of glass is individually selected for its colour and direction of pattern. To further add interest and variability glasses can also be mixed and fused together for colour, texture and to add relief .

My interest in glass has developed over many years and I have attended several courses, including City & Guilds. These courses included stained glass, glass painting, warm glass and hot glass work, allowing me to explore approaches and to extend the range of my work. Recently I have began exploring multilayer fusing with glass powders to create detailed painterly images.

Since moving to Suffolk, I joined the Suffolk Open Studios (SOS) scheme - promoting budding new artists in the County. I successfully exhibited, together with over 120 Artists, at the annual SOS Showcase exhibition, at Rougham Barn, near Bury St.Edmunds, 2007/8/9 and together with six other artists, I hosted a members exhibition at my studio in 2008. As part of SOS, members open their studios to the public for a weekend in June. With a combination of short talks and display my studio has proved popular each year.

I believe that opportunities to use decorative glass today are excellent. Decorative glass is very versatile allowing for a splash of colour in many forms, to accent any room in a way that no other medium can provide.
